Wow, when I first came across the website that promotes this "almost-banned, powerful" book called Witchcraft Exposed, I was really skeptical. Boy, I didn't even think that it might be anything else than your plain old book about how to get that certain person to fall in love with you by going to an intersection at full moon and throwing herbs into the wind or some other nonsense.

Well, I did end up reading what the promotion ACTUALLY said, I saw that there was something entirely different going on. But before I tell you about that, let me say who I am.

I've been reading books about magick and witchcraft since I was a young teenager. So when I say I've seen it all, I mean it. There are so many authors out there who have actually no clue in the world about what the core essence of Magick is. They focus too much on the rituals, the outwardly apparent side of things. Like everything else in life.

I must say I am a bit embarrassed to admit this, but I've actually had a few times in my life where I was so desperate for a solution in my personal life that I turned to spells and magic for the solutions. Witchcraft is becoming an increasingly common modern practice, and so with increased exposure comes a greater inspection of its foundations. The concept of witchcraft finds its roots in pagan religion and folklore, but also Christian theology. And the deepest and most primal element found within the tradition of witchcraft practice is something which we call sorcery. Forms of this activity are found almost all over the world, especially in primal societies. This reflects the roots which we all still hold inside ourselves.

Sorcery is considered one form of magic, and like all magic, there is a basic underlying assumption that the universe is one whole and there are relations between all natural forces which we cannot see or understand. It is these hidden forces and relationships between them that a sorcerer (or a sorceress) tries to control with the inner human power that they hold - or if not successful in completely changing them, at least influencing them in the direction which is useful for them.

Another side of the coin is something that is closely related to sorcery, and that is the process of divination. Some practitioners claim to have an ability to "tune in" to these underlying hidden natural forces and to be able to determine facts about events happening in the future. The physical manifestations that they claim to base their divinations on are often stars in the sky, sheep liver, stones, herbs, or even jackal tracks.

Place the bill in a thin white envelope, then close and seal it. Fold the envelope in half, and from then on, each day for seven days in a row say to yourself once:

Many people are taking an active interest in witchcraft and its practices nowadays. There is a certain charm to the essence and core of what witchcraft is. It means going inside yourself and using your deep unlocked potential to bring about change in the physical reality, with the help of ethereal forces all around us.

There are now spellbooks available online, you can read up on free spells that are available, and think you have been initiated into this tradition. However, witchcraft and Wicca are much more about your inner world, rather than the outside manifestation in rituals and spells in the shape of ritualistic objects such as candles and so on. The modern term epidemic applies, as it was so widespread but quite irrational. At the slightest hint, a person could be accused of being a witch, even if there was no evidence present, was usually enough for that person being taken away, tortured, and killed.

In modern society, however, we have moved on from such insanity and superstition and nowadays, witchcraft is becoming a more and more accepted way of living. Many more people are now embracing the traditions of witchcraft openly, without having to fear persecution. Media attention and movies have played a large role in popularizing the Wiccan religion in particular - one form of witchcraft. But Wicca is just that - only one form of this practice. There are many different movements within witchcraft that are being practiced today - most of them having their roots in ancient traditions.

What is the image that appears in your mind when you think of the word "witch"? I'm guessing you're picturing an ugly, old women with a big nose and a wart on her face, armed with a broom and wearing a black dress? If that's how you do imagine witches, you are not a minority. But you are wrong. Read this article to see how the story of witchcraft actually unfolded.

Such outward projections of medieval witches are common whenever they are pictured in movies or theatre, and it is actually quite an exaggerated image. In actuality, however, all it took to be accused of and executed for being a witch was a peculiar birthmark or freckle, or simply dancing and singing outside where you could be seen, or eventually, simply someone's suspicions or an accusation. Times were rougher back then.

Stories relating to witchcraft have been going around since the dawn of time. However, it was not until the 16th century that persecution of witches started. It was in 1563 that the Witchcraft Act was ratified and this made it illegal for anyone to be a witch or to consort with one. Thirty years later, the first major persecution took place. In 1590 King James I and VI started the North Berwick Trials. Having recently returned from Denmark with his bride, he had almost gotten killed by a powerful storm. This, the king believed, was a conspiracy against him by the witches. He had a hundred people arrested, most of which were tortured and burned alive.

Major persecution again took place in 1661 and 1662 with the Forfar Witch Hunt and the Auldearn Trials respectively. These were prolonged by accusations made by so-called witches in order to save themselves. Especially strange were the Aberdeen Trials where seven women were accused of using mystical powers to murder people, and using body parts from their victims for making potions. And it gets stranger - in 1704 the Trials of Pittenween were based only on the words of a 16-year old boy, and all of the accused were tortured heavily. Only later was it discovered that everything had been made up by the boy.

Another curious case which deserves mention are the Renfrewshire Trials of 1695. An 11-year old girl called Christian Shaw witnessed a housemaid drinking forbidden milk and threatened to tell her mother this, but the housemaid told the girl that if she did this, the devil would take her to hell. And the little girl, the story goes, started having visions and tempers, accusing the maid of torturing her. Some accounts say she was throwing up feathers, wax, stones, hay, even a hot coal. The most extreme descriptions are of her floating in mid-air, throwing things around in the room without touching them. As a result, over 20 people were examined and also tortured. Several of them were found dead. Six of these people were found guilty and burned alive.

The Witchcraft Act was abandoned only in the year 1736. According to some estimates, around 4000 people were executed in Scotland alone as a result of this persecution.

• My intentions are good, I deserve it rightly

Find three cords: a black, a blue, and a purple one, made of thin string. Hold images of happiness in the forefront of your mind and at the same time, braid the three cords together tightly. Now tie a knot at the end of the braided cord. Keep holding thoughts of happiness in your mind. Then tie six additional knots into the string, still keeping up the energy of your positive thoughts. Carry this cord with you at all times, until happiness grows in your life. When you have reached abundant happiness, place the cord somewhere safe. The horizontal bar on a cross stands for our physical existence - which means our life and our body (so it's actually highly symbolic that Jesus Christ was crucified on a cross). The vertical bar, on the other hand, represents more ethereal qualities - knowledge and understanding. So hanging on a cross means overcoming physical existence and entering into the realm of understanding.

The self-help and/or New Age movement is one example of such an influence.

Traditional witchcraft got its start from Britain - it has a centuries long tradition there, and as was said, up to the Middle Ages it was the predominant belief system. This was simply the way people went about their day-to-day lives - practicing witchcraft.

At a certain point it received a strong stigma from the church, in part due to some practitioners (witches) going to extremes and using, for example, blood in their rituals. This attracted the attention of the church powers who used this fact to proclaim witchcraft a heresy. This lead to widespread discrimination against witchcraft practitioners.

Such was the legacy of the church that in England anti-witchcraft laws were actually in effect up until 1951, when they were finally repealed. However, before that time the movement was underground and in great secrecy. It could even be called a hidden society, as even until 1944 people were actually convicted of practicing witchcraft.

In fact, in the Republic of Ireland, the anti-withcraft laws were in force even longer than in England - it was repealed in 1983. And in Israel, which gained independence from Britain before the laws were repealed in 1951, still has the Witchcraft Act in force. Whether it's actually enforced is an entirely different question.

Witchcraft has been widely practiced in the past and is still quite alive today, with millions of practitioners all over the world.
